The New Counselor Workshop is designed for college counselors from 0 to 2 years of experience who are new to the work, whether shifting from another role in independent schools, moving from college admission, or approaching the role from another background or lens entirely. University of Oregon
June 26-29, 2022

Registration fee is $600 (including on-campus housing Sunday-Tuesday nights; commuter fee is $550)

ACCIS Summer Institute remains a highlight of the year for our members. Each summer, we *usually* travel to a host college/university campus for intentional time together to share our own experience and expertise with colleagues and friends as they share their own. This is what makes our flagship professional development event different from other conferences; every conversation is relevant to the work of college counseling in independent schools. Join us virtually, once again, as we come together to ask and answer questions, and much more.

Colloquium

Rec Writers Workshop
July 2022 dates and info coming soon!

The Rec Writers Workshop will help ACCIS members sharpen their skills in recommendation letter writing. The program is focused on writing philosophy (why we write), writing practice (how we write), and writing skills (what or how well we write). The workshop will begin with a conversation centered on letter writing philosophy and positive feedback. The cornerstone of the program comes in breakout groups, a small group of participants who read and review each other's writing. It can be scary to share your writing and let others give you feedback, so we'll focus on building trust within each group through personal connections and a positive, intentional tone. Sessions will offer participants the chance to have a few of their letters reviewed—with warmth and positivity—by trusted professional peers.

Additionally, a session with experienced enrollment leaders will allow participants to hear directly from admission officers about how they are utilizing letters and what is most valuable in their review process, and a session on letter writing with an antiracist lens.

Finally, there will be some time to apply ideas and suggestions from the peer review to get additional feedback. A small amount of writing time is built into the program. Participants can put into practice what they've learned, maybe even trying out a new approach or letter format.

Workshop members will:

  • Share two pre-written recommendation letters with their group
  • Offer honest feedback to peers without judgment
  • Seek to build confidence in fellow writers
  • Learn from each conversation
  • Support each other as everyone takes risks and tries to get better
